Ideation
How do we get today’s generation of tech reliant students to grow interest into the trades? Only 6% of students have access to a shop class while 70% of employers report a shortage in skilled workers. With students constantly being told their path should be reaching for college, we see students don’t lack interest in the trades; they just aren’t expose to the possibilities. In collaboration with Metabo HPT, the made by me. campaign is meant to help students develop a curiosity in the trades and build a career into in. Metabo HPT ask was to Bring Back Shop Class.

Execution
Our first activation would be a high school take over with the Escape Lab, an escape room like experience that allows students to see themselves in the trades and gain hands on experience. Once a student accomplishes a task, they move to the next Escape Lab room where they are given a new task. Once they get a feel for the trades, they continue building on that curiosity with their newfound interest with our Masterclasses. With collaboration with current running programs for high school students such as The Broad: DAP. All Access, and Northrop’s High School Involvement Program, this program would allow for a robust experience. We would have experts in a variety of fields such as STEM, art, and stage production, to show the different career paths trade has to offer.
To help build upon this interest, we designed several examples of what shop class can one day lead to. Finally, we provided a video on the feel this campaign is meant to given.
Outcome
The campaign demonstrated my ability to combine user-centered design, strategic storytelling, and experiential thinking to solve a real client challenge, and it ultimately led to an internship opportunity with Team One, where I continued developing creative solutions for nationally recognized brands.
